Steps in writing a resume/curriculum vitae

Step 1: Choose a Formats

There are several basic types of resume/curriculum vitae used to apply for job vacancies. Although, most of them depends on one’s personal qualifications. But for the purpose of this write up, the three basic style/type will be discussed, which are; Reverse-Chronological style, Functional style and Combination style.

Reverse-Chronological style

You can use this, if;

I want to apply for a job in a similar field.

I want to showcase a vertical career progression.

I want to display my upwards trends in my career mobility

You shouldn’t use this, if:

I am changing my career pathway.

I have major gaps in my employment history.

I jump from one job to the other every few months.

  • Although, this is a more traditional format writing that you come across most times. Chronological format is more flexible and can be used for applicants with any level of experience.

Example, follow this format;

Name,

Address,

Phone and email address

Education history follows

Professional experiences

Reports and awards

Addition skills

Functional style

Functional style/format of resume/curriculum vitae focuses on your abilities and skills, while chronological style/format focuses on career progression. To that effect, the functional style/format is more suitable for those who are career expert.

You can use this, if;

I want to highlight a specific winning skill.

I have several gaps in my employment history.

I am moving out from my career industry.

You shouldn’t use this, if:

I want to display my upwards trends in my career mobility

I lack transferable skills

I am a fresh graduate or I have fresh entry level experience in a specific job opening.

Example, follow this format;

Name,

Combination style
