ICAN which is the institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965 as an organization to regulate the Accountancy Profession in Nigeria. 

Several people always thinks of education when it comes to ICAN. Little do they know that the institute also recruit. Furthermore, the institute has over 40,000 members and is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) and Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA). 

There are seven faculties created by the Council of the Institute to serve as centres of excellence for members’ capacity building and support for specialisation in seven distinct areas of accountancy. 

  • Audit, Investigations and Forensic Accounting; 
  • Consultancy and Information Technology; 
  • Corporate Finance Management; 
  • Financial Reporting; 
  • Insolvency and Corporate Re-Engineering; 
  • Public Finance Management; And 
  • Taxation and Fiscal Policy Management. 

As a matter of fact, the Institute’s quest for more effective pursuit of its objectives, it seeks to recruit suitably qualified candidates in its Research and Technical Education Directorate. 

The Institute’s research and technical education services and activities are directed at: 

Impacting professional accounting practices in Nigerian economy and enhancing ICAN’s leadership and mentoring role in West Africa sub-region; 

Addressing accounting related issues peculiar to transition economies, especially in 


Contributing significantly to policy issues affecting the accountancy profession globally; 

Impacting enactment of legislations affecting accounting practice, business and the Nigerian economy; 

Research into contemporary issues affecting the Nigerian economy financial accountability and practices and matters relating to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN); 

Generating information for the benefit of ICAN members in addressing their socioeconomic needs and relevant ideas to inspire the Institute and enhance its leadership role among the comity of professional bodies; and 

Nurturing ICAN Journal of Accounting and Finance and increasing its impact factor among academics 

From the above prerequisite, the institute seeks to recruit suitably qualified candidates to fill in the below vacancies; 

Vacancy;Research Fellow 

Job Location; Nigeria 

Core Purpose of the job;

  • The position reports to the Deputy Registrar, Technical Services. 
The position is directly responsible for: 

  • Organisation of Annual Lectures and Programmes 
  • Organisation of Budget Symposium 
  • Driving the process of publishing at least, one issue of the ICAN Journal of Accounting and Finance 
  • Solicitation of Commissioned papers for financial support by the Institute 
  • Assisting in generating pre-budget inputs into the Annual Federal Government Appropriation Bill 
  • Functioning as a Rapporteur at the Annual Accountants Conference of the Institute 
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time. 

Competency and Skill Requirement

Strong research, analytical and reporting ability with good communication and interpersonal skills. Success in this role demands diligence, attention to details, creative and inquiring capacity, strategic mind set, leadership, creativity and proficiency in the use of information technology. Ability to work under pressure and demonstrated capacity to work in partnership with diverse groups while balancing the relative sensitivities are also essential competencies for this role. 

Job requirement; 

  • Ph.D with a minimum of five (5) years post-doctoral experience 
  • Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria 
  • Experience in leading, managing and coordinating a broad range of research in line with defined strategic objectives.
