ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for admission into the Post Basic Midwifery programme must be registered nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) and possess a current practicing license. In addition, candidates must possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate with at least five subjects.

The Birth of Kwara State College of Nursing and Midwifery Ilorin

The birth of College of Nursing and Midwifery came into being in the year 2006 with relevant edict processed and debated by the Kwara State of house of assembly before finally accented to by HIS EXCELLENCY, DR ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI, the then Executive Governor of Kwara State. Part 1, paragraph 2 of the edict states that “there is established for the state, a College to be known as the Kwara State College of Nursing and Midwifery (“in law referred to as the College”) on quote. .

BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHOOL OF MIDWIFERY, ILORIN 

The School of Midwifery, Ilorin, was established by the government of Northern region to train grade II Midwives in 1933. In 1965, the school was upgraded and to train Grade 1 Midwives. In 1970, the training of basic students for 2 1/2 years commenced at the same time the Post Basic training for Registered Nurses started. In 1979, the school was approved as an examination centre by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. In 1988, the school was chosen as one of the 6 pilot Midwifery schools to try the new curriculum for Post Basic students. From the above, the categories of student receiving training from the institution were: Direct Entry or Basic Students and Post Basic Students. However the school now offers Post Basic Midwifery programme only bases on the approval of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHOOL OF NURSING, ILORIN

The school was established by Kwara State government in May, 1973 with the sole aim of providing professional manpower needed to man Health institutions in Kwara State and beyond. The first set of 24 students graduated in May 1977 and up to date, the school has produced over 5000 Professional Nurses serving not only in Kwara State and other states of the federation but even in the Diaspora. The Kwara State School of Nursing is outstanding among other schools of Nursing in the federation based on the quality of its products and the physical and manpower facilities there in.

LOCATION

The college is located in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State within old General Hospital wing of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and directly opposite Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin. It occupies the right side of the complex on entering the main gate of the Hospital. Ilorin is the capital city of Kwara State and has basic amenities which encourage peaceful and comfortable co-existence.

The College of Nursing and midwifery is committed to serving the profession of nursing and society and to improving the health of the people of Kwara, our nation and the world. This is accomplished by a faculty that responds to economic and social mandates.

To provide a base for innovative education and research initiatives as well as facilitating the clinical capabilities of faculty, the School of Nursing sponsors and supports nurse managed services that are interdisciplinary in nature and serve diverse populations. Faculty directs health care services – including nurse-managed services – and consults with health care systems, educational agencies and participates in continuing education activities.

Undergraduate study is designed to prepare nursing students to contribute to the health of individuals, families, groups, and communities through nursing science. Graduate study is designed to prepare scholarly, specialized nurses capable of assuming leadership responsibilities within both disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts.
